“Coping” series

In the coming weeks, I’m going to start a series of articles on how to act your way back into psychological health. I’m planning on doing this series of articles for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is figuring out how to make the best use of my training as a licensed psychologist and the abundant free time that being out of academia has afforded me.

The standard disclaimer applies: these articles are not meant to be a replacement for a professional’s help. If you are or become suicidal, please seek immediate assistance. If you’re not already seeing a psychologist and you’re having thought of suicide, you should make a few calls.

TV on your Mac

Since getting my iMac and moving it downstairs, I’ve taken to watching more and more video on it. The problem is, I don’t have a TiVo or even any sort of DVR at all. But I like to watch my shows on my schedule. What do I do? Enter Democracy Player, a free, open source player and video downloader.

Mathematics applied to US policy and life in general. An interesting read.

This article is a description of “Levy flight” as it applies to many things, from politics to social networking sites. The essential concept involves the “jump” from one area/school of thought/etc to another. I’d like to learn more about this. Anyone have any links for more info?

Wii Video 9 - Wii Video Converter

I’ve got a crapload of videos on my iMac. I’ve got 2 choices to watch them now - convert them for my iPod video and connect it to the t.v., or watch it on my iMac. I’ve got my Nintendo Wii already hooked up so I may just mass convert my .avis to store on there. Technology is too hard some times. Continue reading →

Perceived scarcity and Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving used to be a day we could all look forward to for a day off. Now it’s know throughout the country as “Black Friday” and hordes of people line up hours in advance, sometimes as early as the night before to save some money on a (pretty crappy due to the ATi Xilleon chipset) LCD t.v. or computer.

Trade your iPod for a Zune? No thanks.

This is an audio clip from “Buzz Out Loud”, a C|Net podcast. It was so good, I had to post it. Continue reading →
