Wiidiculous or “Why DRM stinks”
February 7th, 2007 — Tech
I’m dusting off the blog to gripe a bit. I’ve got a Wii. I’ve had one since the first day they came out. I’ve loved it and it’s probably the most entertaining new gaming system I’ve ever played. Continue reading →
Useless homepages
December 14th, 2006 — Tech
I’ve got a Cingular 8525 that is the bee’s knees when it comes to mobile surfing and connectivity in general. It’s packed full of all the wireless technologies you can think of: 802.11g, Bluetooth 2.0, and UTMS/HSDPA. It’s really fantastic.
Why then, are we continued to be presented with this crappy default homepage?
Contracts
December 9th, 2006 — Tech
IANAL, as the saying goes, but I know that I don’t like it when people change terms of a contract on me. It’s unethical and should be punishable by some sort of fine or penalty unless it’s a mutually agreed upon change. That brings me to my latest rant: Cingular is changing the terms of my contract. And yours, too, if you’ve got a post-paid contract with them.

Playing with cards, II
December 8th, 2006 — Tech
I’ve found some nifty shortcuts on my Blackjack that I haven’t seen posted anywhere so I thought I’d list them here. I’m sure that seasoned Smartphone users will have heard of these, but they’re news to me.
Playing cards

First in a series of articles about how to use the Blackjack
If any of you know me from my forays in various internet forums (most frequently at Applenova as torifile), you’ll know that I’m something of a tech dilettante. But I’m not a very good one. I get frustrated really easily when things don’t work like they should. That’s not to say that I just give up on the product, but the luster just wears off. But when I first get something, I spend hours with it, learning the ins and outs of it. Trying new software, etc.
My most recent tech toy is the Blackjack (I’m working on a hands-on review of it but in the meantime you can read about it on Engadget). It’s one of the only 3G phones available in the US market.
When do I buy a Mac?
December 5th, 2006 — Tech
So, you’re really excited because you’ve decided you’re going to buy a new Mac. Maybe it’s your first Apple computer. You’ve figured out whether you need a laptop (1, 2) or a desktop (1, 2, 3). Sure, you’ve not decided which of those models you’re going to be getting, but at least you’ve it that narrowed down, right? So the question is:
WHEN DO I BUY IT??!?
This question comes up on AppleNova so often that the curmudgeon in me really gets going. I wish that people would do their own research. Then my “compassionate” side kicks in because I realize that there aren’t many places to find this information.

MacBook random shutdown
December 4th, 2006 — Tech
Earlier today, I was struck by the MacBook random shutdown issue that’s affected MB owners. I thought I had dodged a bullet when I first read about this problem 3 months ago.
Trying Markdown
December 4th, 2006 — Tech
I’m just trying out this plugin called [PHP-Markdown][] to see how it makes things easier.
It’s supposed to do a few things:
- Supposedly makes text more human-readable
- Supposedly makes posting entries with lots of HTML-esque things very easy
Supposedly helps make tedious things like adding links simple
BenQ using WTC images in advertising.
December 1st, 2006 — Politics, Tech
This pretty outrageous. BenQ is using images of the rubble of the WTC in their advertising.
